How to bear ministry fruit

At Anchor Point we have been wrestling through the foundations of following God.  To love Him has been the number one theme.  But there are so many pieces involved in this.

Throughout 40 days we have committed as a church to pray and fast!   We are not gathering at the church to pray (although several are coming early morning to join us in prayer at the church). But we are working on spurring the church on to pray!  To make time within your day to spend time with Jesus and to fall in love with Him.

Part of the journey for me the last 2 weeks – is finding out what scripture says about prayer!  About intimacy with God!  About loving God!  So I have spent a good chunk of time looking at the prayers that are written in the Newer Testament.  I figure that Paul and Peter are pretty important people in the foundation of the church – they likely have a good idea about prayer and its importance.

Today I was reading through Colossians 1:9-12 it says:

“We…do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may have a WALK WORTHY OF THE LORD, fully pleasing Him, BEING FRUITFUL in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; STRENGTHENED WITH ALL MIGHT, according to His glorious power, for all patience and long-suffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

I love this passage!

Prayer leads us to knowing God’s will.   They are praying that they will be filled with the knowledge of his will.   This seems to tell us that knowing God’s will in our lives has to do with God giving it to us – filling us with it.  Where he is actually giving us the knowledge of it.   So if we don’t know what his will is for our lives – that is fine.  As we pray and get to know God, He is going to give it to us.

And it doesn’t end there!  It is to know His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.  So this is not just wisdom and knowledge from the earth or from man – NOPE!!  This is understanding through the lens of heaven.  Wisdom and understanding that are from God.

Prayer also leads us to fruitful ministry.  Paul is giving us a progression – that as we grow in the knowledge of his will for us – From Heaven – Then we are going to be able to walk worthy of the Lord.    And this walking with the Lord – pleases him – and allows us to be fruitful in Minstry.

Paul is giving us a recipe for being fruitful in ministry.   As we seek the Lord – he will reveal his will – which is going to help us to be fruitful.   It seems to say to me – that God’s will is going to be given or revealed – but as we are seeking Him – he will help us to be fruitful in all of the good works that we are doing!  So on one hand there may be something specific for you to do – but on the other – as we seek God the good work that we do will become fruitful – and that will lead us to an increased knowledge of God!  Which to me seems to indicate that Paul understands that all of this comes from God!  Our fruitfulness in ministry, knowing our calling, being strengthened to walk it out, patience, long-suffering, joy – This all comes from God.  Let’s spend time with him!

Now the passage has a lot more to say – but the part that stood out to me seems to be an interesting process of growth.

I get to pray for you the words of Paul!

Asking God that he would fill you with his will – from heaven

And as you do that you will begin to walk in a manner that honours God!

This will cause you to bear fruit in the good things that you are doing

Which will allow you to grow in the knowledge of God

Which will strengthen you – to allow you to continue to walk this walk (even if that includes suffering and hardship) – but with JOY!!~

And this is how we prepare for Heaven!!

Super cool!

See you tomorrow morning!
